Plan Ahead to Avoid Dehydration This Summer
A Personal Note
Wow, it’s Monday already? The past week was busy, busy with
Matt’s parents visiting. We had a really nice visit and then saw them off this
morning. They stayed for a week which was just about perfect. My mother-in-law
and I had a chance to go out and about a couple times on our own, and the guys
had their chance to go as well. Matt and his dad had a chance to go to the
NASCAR race on Sunday afternoon, so that was exciting for them.
Matt, Ryan (our 6 year old) and I have also taken up knitting this week. Yup,
you read that correctly my husband and son have joined me. LOL My mother-in-law
picked us up some Knifty Knitter looms at Wal-Mart and they have turned out to
be really fun! I actually know how to knit (sort of..) with knitting needles,
but this is so much simpler and more relaxing. It has been so much fun! Now if
we could just keep track of the picks you use on them we would be in good shape.
I think our two year old has a hidden stash somewhere.
Just a reminder that we do still have some copies of our
Entertaining Menu Pack Available. The counter isn’t quite doing its job on the
sales page, but there are still several copies available. If you are interested,
grab one before they are gone!

With the bills piling in and vacation bills and back to school
bills coming up, I have started to be extra interested in saving money. I
recently joined
www.dinewithoutwhine.com/refundcents and
www.thegrocerygame.com.
Refund Cents is actually a print magazine, but their membership side of their
website is just as exciting. The Grocery Game tells you exactly what coupons to
use and what items to buy (or often get FREE) each week at your local grocery
store. You set it up according to what town you live in. You can try it for a
month for $1 and I definitely encourage you to give it a try as I have been able
to cut my grocery bill down by 50-75% each time I shop. If you do decide to give
the grocery game a try, I would appreciate it if you would use my email as a
referral. (christine@dinewithoutwhine.com) It’s a lot of fun!
We have the fair this week so that should be fun! Have a great week!

Plan Ahead to Avoid Dehydration This Summer
One problem some people encounter during the hot summer months is
dehydration. Because this can lead to more serious problems, such as heat
exhaustion, here are some ways prevent dehydration this summer.
During the summer months, especially when at the beach or pool, shopping, and
exercising, it is essential to always have bottles of water and salty snacks on
hand. You can buy prepackaged water. Or get a cute bottle and fill it with tap
water. Pretzels or trail mix are great options for salty snacks. Any form of
exercise can result in loss of salt and water through sweating. If the water you
body loses is not replaced, you can easily and very quickly become disoriented,
nauseous, and feel faint. Another sign of dehydration is if your urine is dark
and undiluted.
On hot days, it is very helpful to drink at least ten glasses of water a day to
keep hydrated. This holds true if you are indoors, as well at outdoors. You may
be doing housework or working in your garden in the heat and not realize your
body is losing fluids. Take a break and drink a couple of glasses of water. It
sometimes helps to drink tepid water, so its not such a shock to your system
when you've been in the sun for a while. Run a wash cloth under cold water and
place it behind your neck and/or across your forehead. This will help to cool
your body, as well.
If you suspect you are dehydrated, experts say it is important that you not gulp
down any fluids. This can lead to vomiting. Instead, slowly sip a glass of water
to avoid any further discomfort. If you are outdoors, find a shady area and if
possible, breezy area, to rest until the queasy feeling goes away. In fact,
place a cold wash cloth in a plastic zip lock bag and keep it in your purse or
tote bag, just in case. Better yet, keep wet washcloths in zip lock bags in the
freezer. Take them out of the freezer before you head outdoors. They should
retain some of their coolness and will be welcome relief should you start to
feel the effects of dehydration.
In addition to replenishing water in your body, you need potassium in your
system. During the summer, have a banana a day, as well as snacks or foods which
contain salt. You may also need to maintain or replenish your electrolytes.
There are many over-the-counter energy drinks available which serve this
purpose. Try out different varieties to find your favorite. Carry water or
energy drinks with you, as well as snacks, if you plan on being outdoors on a
very hot day, whether at the beach, your backyard pool, or even at the mall.
Avoid dehydration this summer by paying close attention to the signals your body
is giving off. Dehydration can affect anyone, especially children and older
adults. It often comes on with little warning. On very hot days, check your
elderly neighbors, relatives, and friends to ensure they are not succumbing to
the heat. They are especially vulnerable during the summer months and may not
realize the effects of dehydration until it has progressed. With these tips you
should enjoy a safe and hydrated summer!
