Road Trip – Day 6
We woke up this morning to Dane and a croupy cough. Generally when he gets a bad cold he gets that cough… no fun! I would have thought it would be humid enough in MN to prevent it, but I guess not! He didn’t cough much after I gave him some medicine, but it was obvious all day that he did not feel well. He slept lots and ate very little. Poor little guy! So I stayed with him and Annika at the hotel this morning while the older boys went to VBS and Matt went to the conference.
Matt left the morning session a bit early and we packed up and picked up the boys.
Then it was back to the conference for our final $50 lunch. Lasagna, Salad, & Garlic bread.
We hit the road around 1 p.m. headed for Rapid City SD. (While the tornado sirens were going off for the 3rd day in a row in Fergas Falls, MN)
We tried out E-85 fuel for the first time (we have a flex-fuel vehicle). It was $.70 per gallon cheaper, but you get much worse gas mileage. We figured out in the end it has to be over $.90 per gallon cheaper to make it worth it for our vehicle. So really we paid more for the E-85 per mile… Oh well!
We took little highway roads all through the corner of North Dakota and through South Dakota. (I really have no idea where we were.. I’ll have to look at a map!) We just went were the GPS said… I drove for a bit to give Matt a break. We saw lots of cows, wild phesants, and bugs. Had dinner in Pierre. I was tempted to stop at Wall Drug just so the kids could see it, but we treked on. We arrived at our hotel at 10:00 p.m, but since we switched to MST it was really 9:00 p.m. Kids were in bed by 10:00 (11:00). We were pleasantly surprised to find that the sofa sleeper the boys are sleeping on is brand new! There weren’t any sheets, so Matt had to go ask at the desk. Then they said we could take the plastic off of it, as it was new!
I seem to be talking a lot about Annika’s diapers on this trip… but today she had two huge blow outs that required clothing changes and wipe downs in the car… I’m a bit worried about all these clothes stuffed in plastic bags in our car… For one, when I open those… EWWWW But also, since they are sitting so long, I’m curious if those stains will ever come out!
My parents are also arriving in town tonight – staying at a campground in their RV. We will sight-see with them tomorrow. I’m praying Dane is feeling up to it!
Well, I better get some rest myself as well!

There are more things to consider when choosing between E85 and gasoline for a flexible fuel vehilce. Consider this: An average driver using E85 instead of gasoline in an FFV will prevent, in one years time, four TONS of emissions. That’s a big difference a single person can make, just by choosing E85 instead of gasoline.
