Road Trip – Day 1

Left IL at noon – after church

Stopped 1/2 an hour down the road for lunch

About an hour down the road Dane asked if we were at the hotel yet

Stopped about an hour later for Annika’s Lunch. (she was asleep when we did the drive-thru for our lunch)

We discovered Dane apparently has a fear of bridges – everytime we go over one he says “be careful, please don’t fall off!”

I settled in for a nap….

Got woken up as the radar detector was beeping. How fast are you going I ask? 80 he says… YEAH… for those of you who know my husband, you know he doesn’t drive slow… Usually I am yelling at him to slow down, but since I was asleep… Yup, we didn’t make it out of IL before Matt got a speeding ticket… Surprise Surprise GRRRRRRRRR

We announced we were entering WI and Christian asked if the people there spoke the same language as us… LOL

Next up WI and a HUGE Traffic Jam… The kind where you stop and turn off your car. The guy who stepped out of his car in front of us I HAD to have a picture of… (picture long grey hair, no shirt, tats, & barefoot – not sure how he could stand to stand on that hot freeway! – he made me smile.) so I made Matt take one, and pretty soon everyone around us was getting out their camera’s to snap pictures of the traffic. Guess it was the thing to do! Matt went and talked to the trucker behind us. Apparently there was a wreck about 4 miles up that stopped traffic both ways. Then, a car a few cars behind us was on the way to the hospital, and got stuck in the traffic. Apparently the person they were taking stopped breathing, so then that was another fiasco. We counted six ambulances. At this point Matt says “SEE.. it was good I got pulled over – otherwise we might have been in that accident… Well MAYBE? Finally we got moving and there were no remnants of the accident at all by the time we got up there. Oh, and while we were sitting there, I learned how to tweet (www.twitter.com/themenumom) on Matt’s Blackberry. (I think I might have to get one of those in Sept. when my phone contract is up!)

Stopped in The Wisconsin Dells for dinner. At this point Annika had totally overflowed her diaper… So we got her changed. Of course all the high chairs were being used at the restaurant, so we held her – which turned out okay. Apparently she LOVES KFC Biscuits.

We were on the road again for probably about an hour or so – still in WI and this silver SUV comes speeding by at we’re guessing a little over 100 mph. He caught up with traffic in the left lane (we were in the right – remember I am making hubby go slow now..) and I thought he was going to ram right into the car ahead of him, but he SLAMMED on his breaks and that car got over. Well, the next car didn’t get over (I don’t think he could – there was quite a bit of traffic) So the SUV decided to pass on the left in the shoulder! The gravel caught his tires – shot him in front of that car – he over-corrected shot all the way back to the left – them spun clear across all 3 lanes (In front of traffic) up into the embankment on the right…. (Matt thinks he was even airborne for a second) keep in mind there are cars EVERYWHERE now trying to get out of his way… and then pulled right back onto the freeway and KEPT GOING! Amazingly we don’t think he hit anyone. There were quite a few cars stopped, but I think they just stopped to avoid getting hit… It was absolutely crazy and very scary! We’re thinking he either stole the car or was high on drugs. So for the next hour we were on the lookout for him! We thought for sure we would see him in a wreck further down the road, but we didn’t.

We finally arrived at Waterpark America – Bloomington, MN at 10:50 p.m. (3 1/2 hours past when our GPS said we would arrive when we left our house)

The boys konked out fast. Annika, not so much…. but she finally fell asleep at 12:45 a.m.! It should be an interesting day tomorrow! We’re headed to the Mall of America and of course the Waterpark here in the hotel.. Did I mention we didn’t bring the stroller because it didn’t fit? YEAH… I have the sling & wrap, and I’ll probably end up buying an umbrella stroller eventually.

I guess I better get some sleep!

Well that’s a little more excitement than any one needs! But you are off and a day closer to us. I’m thinking of you as I stumble around on my crutches, or wobble around in the wh/ch scrapping all the paint off of everything.
Hubby went & pick strawberries today with the neighbor that I’m going to try & freeze, and he will go pick some more just before you get here!!
I love this Road TRip journal! keep it up!! love you all. Clara

Nothing like a road trip with kids! Road trips period are crazy, though. Crazy and fun.
