Never a Dull Moment

So my week continues.  Wednesday really wasn’t too bad.  A trip to the Dr. for Annika, Dane played with a friend, Christian did homeschool, Matt worked and taught confirmation, I tried to convince Annika not to climb on chairs…

Fast forward to Thursday afternoon.  We had a pleasant morning.  Lunch was finished, Christian and Dane were playing, Annika was enjoying an afternoon nap.

Soon Dane and I were upstairs talking and Christian was downstairs, I presumed playing.  The downstairs is kind of the kids domain – minus the laundry room and pantry.

Anyway, soon I hear Christian coming up the stairs, not crying, but obviously something was wrong.  He acts panicked and quickly tells me that the fan downstairs was half-way unplugged, so he tried to plug it in the rest of the way and when he did it shocked him.  I’m thinking he probably saw a bit of a spark – you know how sometimes you see that when you plug something in, and it just scared him.  At this point he is just acting scared, not hurt.  Then all the sudden he starts crying and saying Ow, Ow, my hand it hurts!  I looked down to see that his fingers are BLACK and one has skin missing.  YOWZA!

Matt was next door at church.  He had just done a funeral, they had eaten the meal and he was just visiting.  I ran over there and motioned for him to hurry and come with me.  We ran (and I don’t normally run) home while I explained that Christian had been shocked.  By this time, Christian is outright screaming – I’m sure it scared him when I said I needed to run and get daddy.

Matt got him calmed down.  He has two large blisters on his fingers – one that is popped and one not, and he was complaining that his hand stings and tingles, and HURTS… he is obviously in a lot of pain.  As Matt is getting him some ice, Christian tells me that I should go look down there because he is worried it is on fire!  WHAT?!?  As I start walking down the stairs the infamous burning electrical smell hits me.  I panic a bit, and run upstairs.  I told Matt, I’ll do the ice… you go see what is on fire!

Thankfully…. there are circut breakers, and nothing was on fire…  He said, “but you need to go look”.  All I could think of when I saw it was… well… I won’t type the words I thought, but anyway….  something along the lines of “Oh my goodness, that is much worse than I initially thought!”

There was both a nurse and an electrician at the funeral, so that was helpful!  They both provided their services.

This could have been sooo much worse!  Our house could have caught on fire, Christian could have been completely electricuted.  The nurse said it was very lucky it went through his hands and to the wall instead of to his heart.  He could have been laying there in who knows what shape and I wouldn’t have even known it for at least a half an hour.  It is not unusual for them to play down there for awhile on their own.  I wouldn’t have gone to check on him for awhile I’m sure!

The electrician said that when something is half-way plugged in, the current is constantly trying to meet the metal in that plug.  So that was happening and when he tried to plug it in it exploded.  Generally speaking, if something is half-way plugged in I guess you are supposed to unplug it before plugging it in again.  Lesson learned the hard way I guess.

Christian should be okay, it will just be a few days of healing – you know how burns are – so painful!

In the meantime, I am feeling a bit nervous – what’s next?  Everything could have been so much worse for both Annika and Christian, so we are counting our blessings.  But Wow!  What a week.

Oh my gosh! Praise God that Christian wasn’t hurt worse! And thank God the house didn’t catch on fire. I think you’ve had enough ‘adventure’ to last awhile now! Wowsers.
